What is GEO?
GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of making an organization recognizable, retrievable, and citable for generative AI systems, so it appears accurately in the answers they generate rather than only in ranked search results.
GEO and AEO
You will see two acronyms. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) emphasizes being recognized and cited by generative AI broadly. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emphasizes being the source an answer engine selects. They overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably; both aim at the same outcome, appearing accurately inside AI-generated answers.
The canonical definition lives on the Concepts page. How GEO differs from search optimization is covered in detail in GEO vs SEO.
Why GEO matters
Buyers increasingly begin with an AI assistant rather than a search engine. The assistant synthesizes a single answer and names a few providers. If your organization is not recognized and citable, it is absent from that answer, and the decision is often made before anyone visits a website.
GEO is the optimization layer. The prior, strategic question, whether and how your organization should be represented in AI-mediated decisions, is the work of AI Visibility Advisory. Understand the phenomenon itself on the AI Visibility page.
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?+
GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of making an organization recognizable, retrievable, and citable for generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, so it appears accurately in the answers they generate rather than only in ranked search results.
What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?+
AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of becoming the source an answer engine selects and cites when it responds to a question. It overlaps heavily with GEO; both aim at appearing accurately inside AI-generated answers. GEO emphasizes being recognized and cited by generative AI broadly; AEO emphasizes being the chosen answer source.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?+
In practice they describe the same goal from slightly different angles, so the terms are often used interchangeably. GEO frames it as optimizing for generative engines as a whole; AEO frames it as winning the answer slot. Both contrast with SEO, which optimizes for ranked lists of links rather than synthesized answers.
How is GEO different from SEO?+
SEO makes a page rank in a list of links a human then evaluates. GEO makes an organization appear, accurately, inside the single answer an AI system synthesizes, often with no click at all. SEO decides who gets listed; GEO decides who gets recommended directly. They are complementary: weak SEO undermines GEO, but strong SEO alone does not produce AI visibility.
How do you start with GEO?+
Establish entity recognition first (consistent name, structured data, third-party presence so AI systems resolve who you are), then structure content so it is easy for AI to extract and cite, and measure how AI systems currently describe you. For most organizations the prior question is strategic: whether and how to be represented in AI-mediated decisions at all.
